What are YOU doing to save the planet??
It's the weekend again, the time when our family goes through all of our bins and takes the week's worth of items to the recycling center. This has been part of our family's routine for 8 years now!! I remember how shocked I was, the first week that we began doing this, at how much we were throwing out!! It was amazing...4 bags of trash in one week reduced to 1/4 of a garbage bag!!
Once a year, we turn in scrap iron and metal that we have, or find lying around. Just recently, we removed a 20 year old air conditioner unit from my bedroom window and added it to the pile of metal stuff. We've got quite a collection now, and it's nearly time to convert it from old junk to $$.
Speaking of $$, another great recycling time for us is turning in aluminum. Mainly soda cans, but have been known to throw in disposable pie trays, roasting pans and aluminum foil. It's not as many trips, since it takes us a couple of months to acquire enough to make it worth the gas driving there, but worth the payoff when we do!! The highest pay was around $17.00 for 3 over-flowing 30gal bags of crushed cans.
I know when we lived up north, we were able to get a refund from the deposit of each bottle and can...but down in the south it's just the recycling centers for us.
