Trying To Get In The Swing Of Things

It's pretty sad when you let another 7 months pass by before you post. It's not that I don't WANT to blog, I've just found it easier to update statuses on facebook. THAT and Farmville has me in it's grasp. *giggles*

Let me see if I can do a quick recap of my life...
  • I've completely changed my eating habits and have now gone from a size 14 to a 10.
  • Since last year, I've lost a total of 60lbs (still have another 20 to go!!)
  • My sugar is now under control without use of meds.
  • Hubby thinks I'm starving him because of food changes...well he HAS lost 2 pant sizes.
  • Kat also lost weight and I'm now wearing her clothes from last year.
  • Hubby found a job and then lost it. (Long story, but was due to management issues)
  • Washing machine broke AGAIN!! Only this time it's NOT on warranty. I HATE hhgregg!!
  • I also HATE going to the laundry mat to wash clothes.
  • We celebrated oldest and youngest sons' birthdays. (though youngest was in other state)
  • I celebrated my birthday, but now going backwards in years. LOL
  • We celebrated hubby's birthday.
  • We celebrated our wedding anniversary.
  • We're STILL working in our bathroom and kitchen. ROFL!!
  • Hubby bought me a yellow 1974 IH SCOUTII and is now rebuilding the engine.
That's just the highlights...tons more happened but I'll try to go into that at some later time. In the meantime, my time is up and I've got to get my day started. On the agenda for today: clean bathrooms, vacuum den, sweep & mop kitchen floor, upload photos for OCT JAM that originally came from Bunny Cates, mail off OCT JAM to Amber take Kat to work, make dinner and go to SISTERS bible study.

See That Fool Jumping All Over The Place?

Well...that's me doing a happy dance!!

As of this afternoon, I've had 4 consecutive glucose tests come back below 200!!
  • 146
  • 167
  • 186
  • 133
And this last one was almost at NORMAL levels!! I can't begin to say how happy this makes me!! OH...and let's not forget, that all day yesterday and today, my energy levels are close to normal again. I've been out of bed each day cleaning, and even ran a few errands with hubby. So that means I've accomplished my first goal!!

New goal...
Begin walking every other day to rebuild muscles in legs.

A Careless Mistake...

Late yesterday afternoon most of my energy came back, so I spent it cleaning the kitchen. Hubby even caught some of my energy and finished working on my built-in spice shelves that are now hanging above the stove. (He made them out of pieces of the hard wood flooring that I got through FreeCycle last year that was intended to use on the kitchen floor, but they got water damaged waiting for me to use them under a tarp in my backyard.)

I took my time, cleaned everything, top to bottom, rearranged a few things on the countertops, and even cooked dinner for the family. (We had skinless chicken - each piece coated with 2 tsp zesty Italian dressing and baked in the oven, green beans, whole kernel corn, & Stove Top stuffing. Everything was precisely measured...the only difference between mine and theirs...they added salt.)

After everyone was finished, I tidied up, checked email and just goofed off online until it was time for me to eat my snack, take my meds and get ready for bed. 9pm came, I ate my snack, got my meds and brought them to the kitchen and sat them down on my laptop to take with a fresh glass of ice water. Then I remembered I needed to start a load of laundry so that Kat would have a clean work shirt for this morning. I got sidetracked 2 more times after the laundry by straightened things in the dining room and in my bedroom. Finally it was time to check my BP & Sugar and go to bed.

This morning I got up, checked my BP & Sugar & then went to the kitchen to make breakfast. I picked up my meal-planning breakfast list beside my laptop on the kitchen table and notice 2 little pills sitting beside my laptop...the same pills I THOUGHT I had taken last night. My sugar at bedtime was 158...had I taken my meds it might have stayed down...but this morning it was back up to 205. *sigh*

I want to bang my head into a wall. I keep DETAILED LISTS of my BP & sugar stats, meals & meds...down to the exact minute of when checked, eaten or taken. So how is it that this slipped past me? I know how important it is to take my meds...how serious it is if I don't take them...so such a careless mistake has me really worried!! I keep a written daily journal, an online daily journal and even a chart to keep up with everything...I don't know what else to do to prevent this from happening again.

Have You Seen My Energy? I Can't Find It...

There are so many things I want to be doing right now...like attaching more river rock around my tub, cleaning my kitchen, rearranging my den and dining room, sorting through more Christmas decorations to donate, steam cleaning the carpets, dusting the furniture...but when I get up to do these things, my energy is all gone and I can't physically do them.

I tried to dust the furniture in the den, but after doing one table I had to lie down on the couch to rest. I tried to clean the kitchen, but was only able to put 2 plates and 2 bowls in the dishwasher. I went to the front room to get a box of Christmas decorations so that I could sort through it, but when I tried to pick it up, I discovered I didn't have the strength to move it.

My blood sugar this morning and this afternoon was just over 200. I've felt exhausted all day. Most of the night I spent coughing/gagging/tossing/turning. I feel like all the life has been sucked out of me. My blood pressure is fine, so it's just the sugar effecting me. How weird that sugar being elevated could make one so drained and in slow motion.

Here is what DiabetesHome had to say about High Blood Sugar...

Symptoms of High Blood Glucose

Why do I feel so awful when my blood glucose is high? When the blood glucose is high, many people feel unwell. Here are the most common symptoms, and the reasons for them:

TIRED. Your cells need glucose for energy, and the glucose is not getting to them. In fact, your cells are starving and cannot work efficiently. This makes you tired.

INCREASED URINATION. All blood is filtered by the kidney. If there is excess glucose in the blood, this also goes to the kidneys. The kidneys can RE-ABSORB and recycle normal amounts of glucose, as the body does not want to lose it in the urine. However, when the glucose is too high, it can exceed the kidneys' ability to re-absorb it. The excess glucose then goes out in the urine, literally dragging water with it. This means that more urine is produced, and you have to urinate more often.

THIRST. The increased urination caused by blood glucose dehydrates you. Your body perceives the need for extra fluid, making you feel thirsty. Excess glucose in the saliva may also contribute.

WEIGHT LOSS. This directly results from the loss of glucose in the urine. Keep in mind, glucose is a sugar, and represents calories to the body. Losing glucose in the urine means losing calories in the urine. This is like eating a piece of bread and having some of the calories from it lost in the urine. You are not using all the calories in your diet and - as you effectively starve - weight is lost. Furthermore, uncontrolled (high) glucose boosts the metabolic rate, making it easier to lose weight. This might sound like a good thing, and it might be, if the weight lost was only lost as fat. Unfortunately, muscle is lost as well, and you can feel quite unwell and weak as this goes on.

CHANGE IN VISION. This is directly due to a physical change in the shape of the lens of the eye. When the glucose in the blood goes up, extra glucose gets into the lens of the eye. When this happens, water again follows it (very similar to the water following the glucose as it passes through the kidney). When extra water enters the lens, it alters the shape of it. The lens loses its ability to focus light for the eye, which you perceive as blurred vision. This is often a most annoying symptom to the newly diagnosed diabetic person, and it must be emphasized that any visual change that occurs with high blood sugars is TEMPORARY, i.e., it corrects with correction of the glucose. However, this takes time, and it may be as long as 6-8 weeks after glucose has been corrected that vision returns to its baseline, and stays there. Prescription eyeglasses should not be prescribed when the glucose level is high, or changing.

MOODINESS. The brain does not like an environment of high glucoses, and moodiness is a very common symptom of high sugars. DECREASED ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE is also common for the same reason.

MUSCLE CRAMPS. As discussed under weight loss, muscle mass is lost when glucoses are uncontrolled. There is some tissue breakdown, and there is considerable loss of "electrolytes". These are salts that are present in all tissues of the body, and are abundant in muscle. When they are lost, the muscle becomes very prone to a cramping pain.

NUMBNESS OR TINGLING OF THE HANDS OR FEET. As the glucose goes up, more of it passes into the nerve tissue. This radically alters the electrolytes (salts, see above) in the nerves, as well as changing many other functions, and even structures of molecules (protein and enzyme) in the nerve. When the nerve is so affected, it gives false messages to the brain, and this is perceived as numbness, tingling, or even pain.

YEAST INFECTION. Yeast live well in the environment of the vagina. If the blood glucose is high, more glucose is available in the vagina as well, and the yeast organisms like it even more. One or two yeast organisms will multiply, causing a significant, uncomfortable infection. This initiates a vicious circle where high glucose makes the yeast grow better, and the yeast infection (like any other infection) makes the glucose higher, which worsens the infection, and so on. Generally, one must treat both the high glucose and the infection before both will improve. Yeast infections can also occur under the foreskin of the penis, by a similar mechanism.

The most common symptom of high blood sugars is to have no symptoms at all! This is why there are so many people walking around with diabetes without knowing it - they have no symptoms.
