The fridge has been in place since 9pm last night. (Hubby got a late start moving it inside due to him working on his truck and then having to search the neighborhood for Jack-Jack because he wandered off!! -- will go into THAT in a bit) He hooked up the ice maker, attached the new bottom cardboard panel and then I spent the next 3 hours decorating. (Hung more commemorative church plates, and a few vintage serving plates and bowls...brought my pie safe back in filled with some of my tea sets and vintage salt and pepper shakers...then placed my table and chairs back in the middle of the room.) It's starting to look like a kitchen again!!
Today, the plan is to put away dishes in dishwasher, hand wash a sink full of dirty pots and pans, dust all shelves and tops of cabinets, wipe down counters and cabinet doors, clean window, clean stove, clean microwave & front of dishwasher, and finally scrub floor.
Only AFTER all of that has been completed am I having hubby take me to purchase groceries. OH, and I need to find 2 throw rugs...a small one in front of fridge and a long, narrow one in front of sink and stove.

Jack-Jack has discovered female doggies. *sigh* The neighbor's Pomeranian behind us is now in heat...Jack-Jack went missing for 3 hours and I freaked...Hubby drove around neighborhood but couldn't find him...Jack-Jack finally came home, bringing his new girlfriend home with him, while hubby was gone to pick up Kat form work...I put him in his crate for his "punishment"...I'm making an appointment today for him to be fixed.

HALLELUJAH...We Have A Fridge Again!!
After an entire week of continuous spraying, a couple of days of using my "bug killing balls" and 3 days of sprinkling baking soda on all of the shelves and in the drawers and spreading a baking soda paste on all of the rubber seals...the fridge is completely bug free, funky smell free, and has been working beautifully for the past 2 days on my back porch. In just a few minutes, hubby will be bringing it inside, hooking up the ice maker, and I'll finally be able to purchase REAL groceries again!!

So Many Things Left To Do...
So why am I lounging around instead of doing them? I have a perfectly logical explanation...I'm watching one of my fave movies!! SECONDHAND LIONS!! It came on TBS this morning not long after I woke and I just couldn't resist watching it!! *grins*
Just as soon as it goes off, then I'll be back into Kat's room finishing up what I had left from yesterday. Hopefully, I'll have enough time to get to my room...if not then I'll get to it tomorrow afternoon.
We haven't seen any signs of bugs for nearly a week, so we're hoping they are all dead!! Later today, Hubby is plugging in the fridge to see if it works. It will stay plugged on the backporch for at least 24 hours and then he'll move it indoors, attach the icemaker and then we can go purchase a mountain of groceries!! WAAA HOOO
Just as soon as it goes off, then I'll be back into Kat's room finishing up what I had left from yesterday. Hopefully, I'll have enough time to get to my room...if not then I'll get to it tomorrow afternoon.

What's "Bugging" Me Today...
In all actuality, I've not seen a bug in or around the fridge on my patio since late Monday night. I'm hoping that with the removal of all of the stuck on food and water along with spraying inside the fridge every couple of hours since Monday afternoon we're on our way to eliminating the bug problem. As a way to ensure they are completely gone, we are purchasing bug traps and gel to place all along the bottom of the fridge where the motor is located.
I'll also be making my mom's recipe for "bug killing balls"!! (Seriously...it's what she called it and I haven't the energy to come up with another name...ROFLMAO!!) I don't know how or why it works, but it's the reason why we've never had a bug problem in this house.
ITEMS NEEDED:
breathing mask (to avoid breathing in dust while mixing)
thick rubber gloves (like used for cleaning/washing dishes)
goggles (just as precautionary measure)
old measuring cup you can throw away after use
plastic bowl to mix in you can throw away after use
wax paper
ziplock bags
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup boric acid
1 cup flour
1 small to medium sized onion (run through food processor until liquefied)
1 cup powdered sugar (or you can substitute for cocoa powder)
1/2 cup water (though you will likely not need all of it)
DIRECTIONS:
Put on gloves, breathing mask & goggles.
Roll out wax paper. (Make sure to place out of reach of children and pets)
In disposable plastic bowl, mix boric acid, flour, sugar and onion juice with your hands.
Add just enough water to mixture to give it the consistency of bread dough.
Pinch and roll into small balls (the size of marbles).
Place on wax paper until all dough has been rolled into balls.
HOW TO USE:
Place in corners of cabinets, under sinks, in drawers, under appliances, under and behind furniture, in bathrooms, or in any areas where you have spotted bugs. (Caution: make sure these areas are inaccessible to children and/or pets!!)
If you have any "bug killing balls" left, place in ziplock bag to keep soft/moist for later use.
Replace used "bug killing balls" once they dry out/turn hard.

Ten Thought Tuseday...3-31-09
- I'm FREEZING!! Hubby and I woke at 6am to drive to the salvage yard to drop off the two refrigerators that didn't work. Unfortunately, the top was off of the truck and it was raining. We've been home nearly 2 hours and I'm still not warm.
- To answer someone's question on my last post about my fridge infested with bugs...in the past 12 years, other than the occasional wood roach (the kind with wings that fly at you) that has found it's way in during the winter, we've not had a roach problem. We are located on 2 acres of land, so no worries about close proximity to others. The fridge is still outside and now covered with plastic due to the rain.
- The thought that I may not be able to kill all of the bugs inside it is very depressing. I went out several times last night to spray the fridge and to see if anything came out of it's hiding place. Killed two itty bitty ones the first time, but didn't see anything after that.
- I don't know if it's because I was in the rain earlier, or from all of the cleaning that I did to the fridge the last 2 days...but every part of my body is in pain.
- I'm now worried if we made the right decision by accepting this fridge.
- I just contacted an exterminator to find out what I could do to rid my bug infested fridge. Looks like a possibility of going another 2 weeks without a fridge while I continue to spray inside it, set bug traps, and make sure that all water sources have been removed from fridge and surrounding area.
- I wonder if it would have been less hassle and headache if we'd purchased the side by side. Probably be my luck their house was infested with bugs too.
- Nothing to do about it now except invest in more bug killing stuff. I'm determined to eliminate the bugs and won't rest...and definitely won't be bringing the fridge inside my home until they are gone.
- When I told hubby what exterminator suggested, he didn't seem all that concerned. Does he not realize this is going to take some time to deal with? Does he also not realize the entire length of time exterminating also means we will be be without a fridge for the same length of time?
- Am I allowed to break down and cry now?

OMG!! OMG!! OMG!!
...trying to remain calm...
...trying to focus on breathing...
...trying not to panic...
...thankful hubby was able to save me...
I had found my groove...was doing the final cleaning on the fridge door before I put the metal strips and plastic brackets back on them when a roach crawled from under the rubber seal and across my hand. I nearly peed my pants. I grabbed both doors and took them to the front yard and used the pressure washer on them to make sure all creepy crawlies were completely removed from beneath the rubber seal. (Though I had gotten every crevice of the seals last night, I'd forgotten to clean beneath them before I went to bed.)
With the door crisis taken care of, I thought I was in the clear. With hubby busy online looking for affordable parts for Kat's car and his truck, I decided to remove our ice maker and hoses from the original fridge, clean them and then attach to the replacement fridge. I got a little ahead of myself...I took out the screws to the back panel of replacement fridge to make sure it had all of the necessary plugs...but then my world went black. LITERALLY!!
Thousands of bugs went running everywhere!! OMG!! OMG!! OMG!! Hubby came running with the bug spray. There are now a variety of dead bugs in different sizes lying all over my brick patio....though the majority of them are of the roach kind. GROSS!!
The cardboard panel will have to be replaced as I completely destroyed it by stomping like a deranged madwoman.
The electical components to the replacement fridge is now saturated in bug spray and I'm waiting for some of it to dry before I take the Shop Vac outside to suck up all of the dead bodies and this really gross, sticky, nest thingie they were living in. (The only way to describe it is kind of a mix between a spider web and the long, hanging moss from trees you see along the Gulf Coast...and it's this funky brown color.) *trying not to vomit*

I'm Exhausted...But It's SO Worth It!!
Hubby and I picked up the fridge my friend offered at 5:45pm. I was prepared for the dried food and liquid stains inside and lots of dust on the outside from her warning me that it was gonna take some soapy water, bleach & elbow grease to get it clean from her mom (and then her sister's) lack of house-keeping skills. She wasn't over exaggerating that fact.
What I wasn't prepared for was all of the dead bugs combined with all of the food. *shivers* Every nook, cranny, crevice and indentation contained a dead creepy crawly. It looked like some had been in the fridge for so long that they were literally flattened and STUCK to the surfaces. EEEK!!
Hubby loaded it into the back of his truck, I thanked my friend for the fridge, and we took it home. Hubby said he didn't want me cleaning it on the back porch. When I asked why, he said because a couple of LIVE ones came crawling out while he was loading it. I nearly passed out!!
We got it home, unloaded it, and set it far enough away from the house to avoid any live bugs from finding a way inside. I grabbed a couple of old butter knives for scraping, several dish rags for wiping, a couple of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, a bucket of scalding hot soapy water, and my spray bottle of bleach and water. With both doors already off, all I had to remove were the shelves and drawers, plus the metal strips and plastic brackets for the shelving in the doors. (The metal strips were the hardest to clean because of all of the dead bugs and dried food inside the bent/curved areas.)
Next were cleaning the doors. Amber started on the fridge door while I did the freezer door. She got half way done when she had to go home. By the time I finished with mine it was completely dark outside. Hubby brought me his 500watt spot light so I could continue to clean. My friend called a couple of minutes later to ask how the fridge was coming along and if I had plugged it in yet. I told her we decided to keep it outside and unplugged until I got it completely clean and to be safe just in case there were something living inside. (I didn't want to let her know some had already crawled out, because she felt bad enough that she didn't have enough time to clean it before we picked it up.)
We chit-chatted for almost an hour while I started working on cleaning the inside of the freezer area. It took me nearly the entire time...because I had to unscrew the bottom tray, remove it, and scrape out what looked like melted ice cream, popcicles and more dead bugs. When we hung up at 9pm, I gave up for the night. The temperature was dropping, my hands started hurting and half my sweatshirt was soaking wet from all of the hot soapy water I had slung.

- Hubby is removing back panel tomorrow to make sure all live and dead things are completely gone.
- It's the same size as our original fridge so the shelves and drawers are interchangeable.
- And best of all...hubby discovered that it has the option for an ice maker and that the one from our original fridge can be installed!! WHOO HOOO!!
Making A Sacrifice...
Yesterday, I was given the choice of two refrigerators. One is an hour's drive from here...a side by side in excellent condition, filtered water and ice in the door, and within our budget at $275.00. Hubby talked to the elderly couple yesterday and scheduled to pick it up Monday morning.
THEN...
Last night, someone that I knew from grade school that contacted me through Facebook, sent me a message asking me to call because she had something for me. I called, and she tells me she has a refrigerator that I can have...all I have to do is pick it up. (She then explained that it came out of her mother's house that passed away a year ago and they are now trying to sell the house and have no need for the original appliances.) The fridge is white with freezer on top, no ice maker, and just needs a good scrubbing on the inside where some type of liquid or food had been spilled...but something bleach and water would take care of. And definitely NO mold...lol...and best of all...it's only 3 minutes away from my house.
So hubby and I talked about it for a while last night. We either take the one my friend offered and go without an ice maker, or we pay the $275 for the fridge I want and go without parts needed for Kat's vehicle a little longer because we would still need to purchase groceries.
The stubborn side of me says, "GIMME WHAT I WANT" but the practical side of me says, "WE NEED TO SAVE ALL THE MONEY WE CAN".
I called my friend after I got home from church...we go pick it up this afternoon around 5pm and hubby will call the elderly couple to let them know that we won't be able to purchase their refrigerator.

KEEP FINGERS CROSSED!!
We may have a fridge by the end of today!! I was just contacted by someone from Craig's List about a fridge I'm interested in. Original offer was for $350, he said he would take $300. However, another person is interested in it as well. If the person doesn't pick it up today, then he will call me and tell me it's mine.
This fridge is BRAND NEW, NEVER USED and looks exactly like the one we just lost. Hoping we are able to get it...but in the meantime we are still searching.

Our Replacement Fridge...
It's been 4 1/2 weeks since our fridge started having breathing problems. For the first two weeks, it was only breathing enough to keep the upper portion at "refrigeration" temps. So what food we were able to save either went to the upper portion or in an ice chest. I contacted my cousin that does heating/air/refrigerators...but his diagnosis was very grim news. There was nothing he could do for our model and that we should prepare for the worst. Hubby looked for a replacement while I continued to use it's upper portion to keep what little food we had cold.
I knew it was gonna happen, I just wasn't prepared that it would take it's final breath while everyone was deep asleep. I was the one to discover it's warm body the following morning along with all of the warm contents inside. It was a very sad day for all of us...it meant the end of purchasing refrigerated food until a replacement could be found. It's been over a week & half since that day...
Hubby was able to find several used, in good condition, replacements in our area for very little money. Unfortunately, after the first contact and reply on each side, there hasn't been any further talk. While we've been waiting, hubby had mentioned to our next door neighbor of our dilemma and was pleasantly surprised when neighbor said he had 3 extra refrigerators and would give us one for free. Hubby made plans and arrangements to get it.
I was so excited when I was told that it was a side by side with ice and water in the door. My excitement did not diminish when I was warned that the outside had a little bit of rust...I could do a little rust if it worked. I cleared a path for hubby to remove our expired fridge and waited in anticipation for hubby to walk next door with the hand truck and bring back our replacement.
Hubby arrived and I was standing ready with dishrags and cleaning products in hand. I had a happy tune in my heart and a smile on my face while I waited for him to set it on the porch beside me and unstrap it from the hand truck.
Hubby went inside and left me to my cleaning. I started on the outside, but just cleaned the left side when I realized the black stuff I was removing wasn't dirt but mold. I opened the freezer door and every surface was covered in mold. I looked closer at the rubber seal to the freezer door and saw it was completely black. Then my heart fell to my stomach when I noticed inside the freezer that all of it's water/ice components had been removed. I suddenly got scared and slowly opened the refrigerator door...my heart fell to my feet. Every surface in it was also covered in mold and the entire bottom, across the front where it breathes, was so rusty that it crumbled when you touched it.
My happy tune in my head and the smile on my face suddenly left...I decided to just get serious and work at getting it cleaned. I spent an hour scrubbing until my arms hurt, but only managed to get the solid surfaces of the freezer door done. The sun went down, I lost natural daylight, I gave up for the night.
It's a new day and I've already had a little visit with it this morning to figure out if it's a lost cause or if I can really salvage it until we can get something else. Honestly though, if I get near it again with cleaning products, I will need a mask...I don't want to be breathing in all that mold.

An Empty Closet & Fridge...
Yesterday afternoon, while I was getting ready for church, I was searching through my closet for something cute to wear. Every pair of pants, blouse, skirt and dress that I tried on ended up being too big!! It's a good and bad thing. Good that I've lost more weight, but bad that I now have to get rid of some of my fave clothes!!
The past three hours I gathered all of the clothing that are falling off of me and placed in a garbage bag to take to the thrift store. I now have two empty drawers and my closet is 3/4 empty. It's a good feeling to see it empty and to know that I'm that much closer to my goal weight!! (This will also make my dietitian happy to hear too...lol)
Just after lunch I'll be moving furniture and clearing a path for hubby to remove old fridge and bring in the one our neighbor is giving us. Due to there not being a shut off valve to the ice maker on the old fridge, hubby will need to shut off the water to the house until he is able to connect to the side by side. I haven't seen it, but hubby and neighbor said it's not in the best of shape as far as appearance. I don't care what it looks like or how much I need to clean it to make it look pretty...I just want it to keep refrigerated foods cold and freezer foods frozen!!
The past three hours I gathered all of the clothing that are falling off of me and placed in a garbage bag to take to the thrift store. I now have two empty drawers and my closet is 3/4 empty. It's a good feeling to see it empty and to know that I'm that much closer to my goal weight!! (This will also make my dietitian happy to hear too...lol)
Just after lunch I'll be moving furniture and clearing a path for hubby to remove old fridge and bring in the one our neighbor is giving us. Due to there not being a shut off valve to the ice maker on the old fridge, hubby will need to shut off the water to the house until he is able to connect to the side by side. I haven't seen it, but hubby and neighbor said it's not in the best of shape as far as appearance.
